The current ISO 9001: 2008 (ISO 9001: 2000) standard has formed the basis of a number of other industry standards, where additional industry specific requirements have been included to produce a new standard. Two of these standards are ISO/TS 16949: 2002 Automotive Quality System Requirements and ISO 22000: 2005 Food Safety Management Systems.
· The current basic Quality Management Standard is ISO 9001:2008. The most recent version of the ISO 9000 standard was released on November 14, 2008.
· The ISO 9000 Standard has been adopted by more than 175 countries worldwide
· It applies to all types of organizations, large and small and in many industries
· Is generic and can be applied to both product and service oriented companies
· Documentation is the core of ISO 9000 conformance - "Say what you do, do what you say, and write it down"
· Is completely voluntary; An organization can be in compliance with the standard without seeking ISO registration
